veg of the month – sweetcorn

September 23, 2009 · 2 Comments

The current spell of bright, sunny weather means now is the ideal time to enjoy corn at its ripe, sweet best. Our field workers judge when a cob is ready by feel alone; if you peel back the leaves it will quickly deteriorate. The most damaging (and unlikely-sounding) pest to the crop is our local badger population. Badgers have a sweet tooth and adore wreaking havoc through a field, grabbing mouthfuls of sweetcorn and generally delighting in destruction.sweetcorn read more

Regardless of any disputes as to the nutrional content of ‘Organic’ veg versus commercially produced veg, the taste test should be conclusively in favour of organic food. My memories of home-growm produce come flooding back with every mouthful. The boxes encourage you to try veg otherwise avoided because of lack of knowledge. Now we research and experiment with new flavours, often creating new recipes. Your boxes have now given us a new interest in what we eat and combined with our own free range eggs a well-balanced diet.

A bit off topic but it is not only sweetcorn that badgers love, they adore lawn chamomile too. They only way I have kept badgers from destroying my chamomile plants, after years of trying, is to plant them in my Riverford pinewood coolbox … now when I exit the house I can brush my hands thru my delightfully lush and waist-high chamomile ‘lawn’. I note that the coolbox has been removed from the Riverford List, why is that?
